Sun & Skin News (A Publication of the Skin Cancer Foundation)
Hats are back! As much for style, but also for protection. The sun's ultraviolet radiation (UVR) increases the risk of all skin cancers, and hats significantly protect the head and neck (depending on the wideness of the brim) Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, causing more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. Wearing a hat is now the height of chic! Especially hats with brims.
INTERESTING FACTS:
Dark or bright colored hats absorb UVR better than paler colors
The denser the fabric, the higher the UPF. Look for closed weaved fabrics and tightly-woven straw
Look for hats that follow the contours of the head and neck
Hats with at least 3 brim encircling the circumference protect the face, ears and neck. Examples include the Bucket, Cowboy, and Panama styles.
